Emneth (Live)

from Slow Guitar by Adrian Legg

/

about

I was brought up in a C.of E. church choir. We used Hymns Ancient and Modern, the four-part version. Hymn tunes had to be simple so a congregation could learn them quickly and join in. The choir and organist's job was to colour the verses differently to keep the music interesting. I wrote this with the MIDI and modelling tools very much in mind. They could behave erratically – a mis-hit with a right hand finger could cause chaos; guitar-based pitch to voltage conversion for MIDI isn't a perfect science, especially when it's one musician doing the whole thing live. Many hymn tunes were named after the places where they were written; I called this 'Emneth' after the place in Norfolk where my great grandfather was choirmaster at St. Edmund's parish church.
There is a guitar score for this.
